to be pedantic, nobody knows what the "original" overture sounded like as Sullivan lost his manuscripts enroute to the new york premiere and had to rewrite much of the music ...

What the hell is all this shite about versions. I f your talking about the shit musical movie thing then you can't say you are familiar with the pirates of penzance at all.

Anyone with the barest familiarity with the opera, and of the slightest musicality, will recognize that this is a badly truncated and insensitively mangled version of the true overture; poorly cobbled parts of the proper overture. The extremely poor editing would never have been sanctioned by as good a composer as Sullivan, and anyone who seriously thinks this is the original overture in its complete form needs to consider applying to a mental home.
