SECRECY is the FRIEND of TYRANNY. The ONLY reason for ANY secrecy in government including the Supreme Court is potential damage to troops in the field. The PEOPLE have an absolute right to know what is being done in their name with their money and their rights. Scalia should be impeached or at least resign from the SCOTUS. He is unfit for office.
No, there shouldn't be any cameras in the court b/c the news media will end up just taking snippets of the trial and leave out IMPORTANT details of the ruling. For example, in Lawrence vs Texas, the news media can show Anthony Kennedy saying that gays can have sex if they want to but won't cover him saying that it doesn't automatically lead to marriage. Also, we don't want justices to rule b/c they want to 'look good' but to have SUBSTANCE. Remember, this is the court of last resort.
If viewers would watch every minute of argument, I would be all for it. The propensity of media to use sound bites might undermine justices' willingness to ask difficult and unpopular but constitutionally relevant questions.
If a person cares all that much, she can read the transcripts and court records or the decisions. In the end, the decisions are all that really matter for the law.
I think when it comes to the secrecy of the Federal Courts, we do not have the right to know. There are somethings we should not know under our Republic Government.

Interesting acknowledgment here that the television news is horse shit.

Scalia cites personal vanity as a rational for no cameras in the courts.
I guess that's a better excuse than "we're smarter than you, so you don't need to know".... :)
