In late January 2010 I undertook a hike through the Narrows in Zion National Park. Unaware that dry suits were available for rent, I layered up in all my fleecy goodness and stomped off into the river, promptly getting soaked to the waist with 40° water. Twice I almost turned back because of the frigid temperatures but each time serendipity smiled upon me and I ran into other, better-prepared hikers who encouraged me to keep heading up the river.

And I'm oh so glad that I did because the Narrows are quite spectacular: a 20-50 foot wide slot canyon with walls as high as 2000 feet, carved out of beautiful orange and brown rock.

This video shows some highlights from the hike (getting bombarded with ice pellets, a frozen waterfall, and my best Bear Grylls impression) as well as some photos captured during the day.

  • I went during the summer, the temperature on the top side was 110 or so, and the water was too cold to swim in.

  • Very lovely pics!! Thanks for sharing.

  • Ha. Just noticed that you have a Narrows video too. That's funny that we basically shot the same hikes but in reverse of each other. Anyway, great vid and great photography once again.
