"OUHEN" (往返/おうへん), is a short series documenting a trip to Japan I took between August 11th to August 19th, 2007. In only a short week, I met many people, took many risks, and found myself in many problems I hadn't foreseen or planned for. On this episode...

I leave for Japan, but before I can I must pack my bags, get a ride to the airport, deal with security, eat some lunch, and board the plane. Oh, and beat solitaire.

Music:

♫ plastic tree - nega to poji
♫ the spores - heat seeker
♫ we are the fury - better off this way
♫ belle and sebastian - funny little frog

  • Alright. So I finally made an account on YouTube. And now I'm commenting on this to "raise your YouTube status" (I'm the moronic child who mentioned this earlier in Japanese). Hooray.

I have to say, the music choices you made really were fantastic. Some of them I'm familiar with, and some are completely new to me, but they all sounded good and appropriate for the situations. So you get a free cyberspace high-five.

  • Thank you for the internet ego boost. I personally feel choosing the music was half the fun in editing this project. I had a vast library to choose from, and if you check the last video out you'll notice that the list of songs I used probably exceeded 100.

    Probably.

  • i followed your reply to the math question from eric! I am enjoying your videos! I will be visiting in May 2008 for 2 1/2 weeks! Can't wait! I will be youtubin' it up as well! Nice to meet you~

  • Good to see the YouTube community working like it should. I hope you enjoy how the series turned out, and I'm glad that you found me through another great entertainer.

Have fun! I'll be sure to watch anything you put up in the future.

  • thank you so much for doing this

  • i like you blog

  • To be honest, it was the only thing keeping me sane while in another country.

Like I told others who've been watching, the video camera was the only thing I could talk to without having to slow myself down, or clarify what I had said. I could easily have a conversation with it, and wouldn't have to worry if it could understand it or not.

Yes, that sounds incredibly dorky. I know.

  • sweet response. i get your point.

  • Why? Well, I've seen too many 5-6 minute videos on YouTube full of what Japan LOOKS like, and not enough of what Japan FEELS like. For the most part, everyone has seen the downtown crosswalks, the huge buildings, and the pretty lights. I do record more of what is around me later on, but only once I reach very rural areas - the parts that to me, are the defining feature of Japan. I'm glad you're interested in the videos, and I can only hope you are as entertained.

  • For the most part, I would say this "documentary" is 90% me talking about what I'm about to do, or am doing at the moment of recording, and 10% footage of my surroundings.
