An experiment to see the effectiveness of needles thrown as bo-shurikens.

Items:
2 Straight Upholstery Needles
Length: 8.9 cm or 3.5 inches, Thickness: 2mm

2 Sack Needles
Length: 7.5 mm, Thickness: 2mm

My conclusion:

1) It is not so good against wood and the best penetration is 5mm into foam..

2) Needles have too little mass and weight to be effective as projectile weapons.

3) Throwing very light objects like needles is bad for the arm. I know, I just tested it.

4) I choose to ignore that needle shuriken is effective when thrown at the eyes. Thats incredibly difficult to do on a moving target.

Its the above for me.
But don't let this stop you from testing this yourself or having fun throwing needles.

  • would it be safe to assume that light objects are bad to throw? There was a video where Suzuki sensei says something about the arm tendons damaging but I don't really understand how it does that (but I do believe it would hurt)

  • Bad in terms of body safety would depend on the method.

I understand what Suzuki sensei says in the context of traditional and his style of bo-shuriken throwing. And I agree with him.

Thin hira shuriken or even name cards are thrown differently that there is little harm to the body. Effectiveness of light objects depends on the target and distance.

There is a method of throwing by holding the tail of the bo-shuriken which seem to use little effort, but I am not familiar with it.

  • i also tried doing this by spitting the needles 吹きみ針の 術

  • That would be so cool to see.

What was the distance you used?

I bet you used the normal clothing sewing needles?

  • what kind of needles are these are they special trowing needles? or just large sewing needles?? thanks

  • still impressive that you can throw such small needles. I made some longer ones that seem to fly better using half spin, its the only way I can get them going fast enough from more than 4 meters away. but I do agree its hard on the arm (like chopsticks) and probably not good if you do it a lot. I tried card throwing for a while and had the same problem lol.

  • impressive but i prefer my mini spud gun in using a needle projectiles

  • ..it depends on how you throw

  • you have to be very close within a foot and they were regular needles
