  • Hi OddlyFamiliar: Sorry for the slow reply. Your lips should be about 1 1/2 inches away from the jug, although this might vary a bit depending on jug design. You have to be close enough so that most of the sound energy goes into the jug, but far enough away so that the sound can come out!

  • The glass jug was a milk bottle. Check your grocers dairy case to see if any local milk prodecers are using glass bottles.

  • Yes, that's Corn Bread and Butter Beans I'm playing, and a Carolina Chocolate Drops cap I'm wearing! Dom Flemons is the guy who inspired me to take up the jug!

  • Can't seem to post the link here it is (remove the spaces)

Search on the New Sunshine Skiffle Band 2010 Washington Folk Fesival

  • @Gutbucketeer Thanks for the reply! Marv seems to be doubling the washtub bass, so the two combine into a hybrid bass sound that combines the "plunk" of the bass with the "slide" of the jug. A nice example of a jug band in the Louisville ragtime (rather than Memphis country blues) tradition.

  • Interesting and informative stuff, thanks.

  • So is it possible to order a ceramic jug online or do we need to hunt for one locally? If so where online or locally can we look?

  • So, how far do you away should your lips be from the jug?

  • Thanks Scott!

I'm writing some jug band music for a tv show and this was very helpful.

  • @ScottKnick1 I love the carolina chocolate drops....I seen them in concert, and actually met Dom and Rhiannon!!

  • Hey Scott, I am not sure but the song you played on the glass one, was that cornbread and butterbeans (carolina chocolate drops)? Also I was wondering were you got that jug and were I could get one.
