Kermit was actually a regular on Sesame Street for years and was on the show sometime prior to the Muppet Show.

Kermit - as well as Rowlf - pre-date both Sesame Street and the Muppet Show by many many years. Look for things like Rowlf on the Jimmy Dean show and early Jim Henson stuff.
