These are germ granules in C. elegans. We call them P granules. They segregate to the primordial germ cells during embryogenesis. Germ granules are found in the germline cytoplasm in most, if not all, species. They are thought to act as germline determinants that endow the germ line with its immortal and totipotent properties. We use C. elegans as a genetic model to study germ granule assembly and function. P granules have been marked in this embryo with a Green Fluorescent Protein tagged to the P granule protein PGL-1.
