Not true. Carrying a gun doesn't necessarily decrease the risk--if anything, it may just prolong the inevitable or something worse could happen (like being overpowered and the gun being taken). There are many factors that could also come out negatively from having a gun. It's a fair suggestion to say have a gun (since it COULD save your life) but each factor must be weighed in.

so as long as their are humans on this planet, there will always be shit like rape and murder. Secondly, your missing the point, guns decrease crime overall, all these little details don't matter in the grand scheme of things. And yes of course you would need to obtain a licence to have a gun, the whole point of obtaining a licence is to apropriately train you to use guns properly and stop your self from 'shooting your self' as you suggest.
