If the US never actually made it to the moon, wouldn't the USSR (who were tracking the US spacecraft) have debated it to humiliate their competitor. Also they left a reflector up there, without which we could not measure the distance between the Earth and the moon (by the way the moon is slowly moving away.)

If it was set by a probe then why shouldn't we be able to travel to the moon ? It not like it it is years of distance from us like other planet. So it doesn't have a big supplies problematic.
