www.drsophiayin.com presents an example of how to keep a dog who's very distracted by toys focused on you (without bribing him with a toy:-). Jonesy loves to chase toys, squirrels, and other prey-like things. One way to help train him to focus on me instead of the distraction and to learn self-control is to stop approaching the object every time he gets ahead of me. When I stop, he understands that the only way we will walk forward is if he goes back to heel position.
Once we get close to the toy, I tell him "ok" and reward him by letting him get the toy.
Note that this is not a battle of wills, it's just the only way he gets to earn the toy. He understands that when he does what I want, he gets what he wants. Using force such as choke chain or pinch collar pop cause dogs like him to become temporarily depressed (sad demeanor) but when highly aroused they still break out of the behavior suppression and become more aroused. In fact the correction can cause them to become even more aroused and then aggressive. In general i recommend use a combination of rewarding good behavior and removing rewards for undesirable behavior and rarely use or recommend choke chain, pinch collar corrections.
Great Job! This dog is completely focused on you. Im working with my puppy on heeling, hopefully I can get her close to what you have accomplished.
