This is an update of my old video, refilmed on my new TV for better quality.

The Sega Saturn was an amazing console and it's home menu was advanced for its time, with great CD player features, a clock, and even some memory for game saves powered by a watch battery.

The music is Muse - Stockholm Syndrome.

  • I got the the backup memory cartridge, but it still asks for the date and time every time I turn it on! And I still cant save my games, WTF is going on? does any 1 know?

  • The date and time relies on the back up battery. At the back of the Saturn on the left there is a flap- pull this open, there is a button cell battery that needs to be replaced, CR2032 if I remember right. That should at least sort your date and time issue. The backup card should store independently of the battery backup.

  • Ok, thank you, and will that give back the "save game" option on my games? 'Cuz I can't seem to find that on most of my games.

  • Erm a dead battery makes no difference to the game. You can save your game, but because the battery is dead it will be lost when you power off. What game(s) are you playing?

  • What option do you select to start a game?

  • ..or the top left button. With an audio cd it sets the CDG channel, with a game disc it becomes a Sega Saturn logo which boots the software.

  • The sega saturn was one sexy beast.

  • Wow, that system menu WAS advanced for it's time. All the PlayStation had was a stripped-down CD player and a memory card manager. Hell, it didn't even have a system clock.

DVDs became mainstream/affordable six years or so after the Saturn's launch. There was big debate over whether the Saturns successor, the Dreamcast, would include a DVD drive. It didn't- and some feel this was the root of it's failure, as the PS2, although more expensive, was bought by some as a 'cheap' DVD player upon it's release..

  • The saturn looks like an awesome cd player, can it play dvds by any chance?

  • @abhitron

The only reason it failed was because Sega had close to no 3rd party support as they were all going for Playstation and Nintendo and they rushed the console out releasing it on E3 rather than it's actual due date

  • looks like space shooter

    What do you mean?

You place the disc in the drive like any other CD console and turn it on. in this case I have inserted an audio CD. If i wanted to play a game now, I could just open the disc drive, insert a game, and press 'play game' (where set CDG channel is during audio playback)

  • How do you actually play a game on it?

  • That "adjust pitch" reminds me of the dsi.

Aha! More factual evidence that Nintendo rips off Sega!

Nah I'm kidding, but imo, Sega Saturn is the most underrated system ever, not the Sega Dreamcast, the Dreamcast at least had some BRIEF success.
