Thats a difficult question to answer as we would have to first define the word film more clearly. However to my understanding the first film in the traditional sense was made in 1878 in the United States it was simply two dozen or so still images of a galloping horse that were used in a loop turned by a hand crank to give the idea of fluid motion. Im sure youve seen this at museums and such.

Oh my god, I said the SAME THING the first time I ever saw his movies. I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the resemblence. Except Gary is much much taller and "suaver".
