The debris hut is a simple shelter that can be made in a survival situation, but can also be a fun shelter to make near a home for a fun test of one's skills.

Make your frame like a mummy bag. You don't want any extra space, since you have to keep it warm also. You want to stuff the inside with the softest driest debris you can find, and then burrow your way in and pull more in after you. You want to be in the middle of a pile of debris with as little air space as possible.

    It is really quite comfy!

I do have a concern about layering the sticks and leaves, since the sticks might tend to wick rain into the pile, reducing waterproofness.

  • Nice job!

I will make a couple of observations that you probably know, but may help others.

In cold weather, the general rule of thumb is to make the debris as deep as your arm is long. In other words you should be able to stick your arm into the debris up to your arm pit and not be able to touch the sticks yet. This will keep you warm most anywhere!

In milder dry weather you can get by with less, but you can never have enough debris!

  • Thank you for sharing your debris hut shelter! You're off to a great start. Good site selection, good motivation. Please share your experience after your first overnight! Much Respect, and keep learning from first hand experience, there is no substitute.

  • Great job...
