How big can one of these be? A friend and I saw an absolutely massive fireball in the sky in Essex last night (10th august) around 11.30pm. It was in the sky for almost 10 seconds. It looked so big that you would imagine it would definitely get through into the atmosphere. Honesty, it was soooo huge!

does anyone know how many an hour you can see, say, a week from the peak? planning a trip to the sierras for 2011 partly for this. not sure we can go that weekend due to school training prior to the new year. plus the moon is full 8/13/11.

We've seen over ten per hour a week before or after peak, but that was always under moonless dark skies. The 2011 August 13 Full Moon and its "adjacent" gibbous moons will probably prevent seeing dimmer meteors.

Generally, anyone in the Northern Hemisphere should be able to see them the best. In previous years, I've seen some pretty good ones as much as a week or more before and after the peak. But they definitely are less frequent the further you are from the peak time (Aug 12-13). Unfortunately, the best thours to look are between local midnight and dawn, when we're all usually asleep. I hope you get to see some.

You probably won't see as many as last night, but with clear skies you should be able to see meteors in decreasing numbers for a few more nights. Good luck.
