To understand the brain's equipment. you'll likely fall less easily into the basal ganglia's propensity for ruts and benefit more from working memory's zest for rejuvenation. While we still have much to learn, science is shedding light on how brains can work for or against change. In this video think of the wine glass as metaphor for working memory, and the backpack as metaphor for basal ganglia. Then imagine the tug-of-war that can at times pull from both sides. One side resists change, the other resists routines. Of course in your own brain they work together, and they also have many functions, not included in this one dialogue about change - between the two.

  • Thanks-good points. Backpack is metaphor & works well for some. Example:

Good tone responses store in BG to elicit the following:

    1. Affirm a persons thoughts before sharing your views. 2. Thank people for different ideas presented. 3. Share personal experiences respectfully rather than as a need to top others. 4. Ask 2-footed questions rather than offer your opinion too quickly. . Ask- What if? 5. Add unique ideas to the mix to inspire others from different angle.

    Appreciate comment.

  • Well done, ladies. Turns out my wine glass and backpack arm wrestle quite often. Next time put the wine glass closer to mic. Thanks so much!

  • It was fun to make this video with you, Ellen. It presents some of the workings of the brain in a fun way. You created interesting metaphors! Why these?
