http://www.ClearedJobs.Net L-3 Communications GSES Recruiting Manager Bill Lewis provides some job seeker tips for transitioning military.

I'm Bill Lewis. I'm a Recruiting Manager for L-3 Global Security Engineering Solutions, but foremost before I started with L-3 Global Security Engineering Solutions I was a veteran for 23 years and a retiree. I'm presently here at a Cleared Job Fair and I've been asked my opinion on the challenges that veterans see.

I want to start out by saying the first challenge of most veterans when they are seeking opportunities outside the military is to be able to civilianize their resume. What I mean by that is some gunnery sergeant that I've spoken to or infantrymen, they seem very challenged by the fact, how do I civilianize my resume? This is the skills I have. There are not many jobs in corporate America that need somebody that is an infantryman or a gunnery sergeant.

I'm going to say two things to that. I'm going to say corporate America is seeking the values, the motivation and everything a veteran has to offer, besides possibly the skills of an infantryman. The first thing as a veteran that you want to do is civilianize that. You can turn the label as gunnery sergeant around to state on your resume that you're a supervisor, a leader, a lead team member of a squad, or a team of individuals, that you motivate to do xyz whatever the xyz is.

And secondly, if you feel challenged by the fact that you might just be an infantryman, keep in mind that you have been taught and trained so many diverse skills. One of the other challenges you may have is actually when you start editing and fixing your résumé that has so many skills that you're not sure which ones to put on your résumé.

That takes us down to another path -- when you come to a job fair that is very well organized like a Cleared Job Fair -- we have a strategic advantage as a military veteran. That is the fact that we know how to think strategically. Before the job fair plan your strategy before you walk in the door. Have a resume that's targeted to a specific job that you have the knowledge, skills and abilities to do.

Secondly, have enough resumes when you walk in there to turn around strategically and focus in on the companies that you may want to be employed by.

Plan, civilianize your resume, and be prepared when you come to a job fair. Thank you for volunteering and serving our fine country.
