Marilyn Horn was immensely talented in the mezzo repertoire; her bel canto pairings with Joan Sutherland are magical; her Rossini & Bellini were unmatched in the 60's & 70's during her career. She experimented with repertoire that wasn't suited to her voice: Baroque, Wagner and Verdi. She can sing Verdi decently but Amneris calls for a dramatic mezzo with more thrust and a "darker" sound. Compare with Rita Gorr, Shirley Verrett, Grace Bumbry and Dolora Zajick, all of them were great Amneris

I adore Ms. Horne, but she is out of her league here & in other ventures into Verdi, such as Eboli!

@mm9913 I agree completely. of course, she never HAD to oversing...her voice was built like a TANK, and it was VERY big.
