I just took in this white cochin rooster, who I've named Prince Charming.
Someone abandoned him on a friend's property, so I took him in.

This was the scene on his first day out with the flock.

  • I've got a large cochin, almost 2 feet tall, but he is just as cute as your rooster :)

  • Cute! Cochins are such sweeties :)

  • I think its a female now because the males i know that i have don't have their saddle feathers yet.the females have thier back feathers , like my white cochin and the cochin has most of its body covered with feathers and the males have less plumage

  • Females are supposed to feather out faster, but males develop faster.

The only sure way to know is to wait until the chicken either lays an egg or crows XD

  • Oh it does hold its head up high and every time vistor go near it it hops and hides oh bu8t its friendly to people he knows and it does have saddle feathers so i guess its a rooster, Thank You

  • I have never raised a rooster that was not friendly.

I find that if I think that a chicken might be a rooster, it usually is.

Your cochin sounds like a sweetheart :)

  • Aw, I could listen to that all day, they sound so busy and happy!

  • If it's a rooster, then he should start crowing any time now, that's always a sure sign. :)

You can tell sometimes if the comb is unusually bright and large, or if the bird sprouts saddle feathers. (I'm assuming you know what those are, but if not let me know)

Or you can sometimes tell from the bird's behavior. Cockerels hold their heads a little higher than pullets, and are generally slightly more alert.

  • I Have a White Cochin im a big fan but its a month old and i can't tell if its a rooster

it has a short tail and my family thinks its a rooster but how can i be sure??
