Here's a comparison shot of the laser scanner (top) and the realtime laser simulator (bottom). I think it does a pretty good job of capturing the performance of the real thing. I chose a more complicated/messy video for this one, to better show off the limitations of the system (that's Marisa Stole the Precious Thing by IOSYS).

Note: the laser is, of course, adjusted to a smaller size and lower brightness here than usual. Otherwise the simulator on the screen would be completely overpowered by the laser.

As usual, if you're interested, check out http://marcansoft.com/openlase and http://git.marcansoft.com/?p=openlase.git

  • how does the laser scans the surface? line by line or drawing directly the lines. With scan I don't mean detect the surface, I mean like tvs uses pal or ntsc.

  • @joselu90 It draws the image in vector form (directly), not raster form (like PAL or NTSC).

  • @marcan42 m thinkin of doin engineering ,m an indian...hw did u learn all this electronic n programming... i wud really love to hear wat u hv to advice me :) jus wana learn

  • Was this video shot in one frame or did you composite it together? In other words, did the simulator and the projector run simultaneously and in sync?

If so, OpenLase looks to be a seriously powerful framework for new development.

  • Song?

  • man, seeing these graphics make me want my old Vectrex back

  • You are the best kind of hacker.

  • I don't know the slightest bit about this, but according to the linked site, this was done with a hack of a single Chinese laser-pointer attached to some other stuff. How on earth can you let a machine move something this incredible fast with this precision? I don't know, but it sure does look nice.

  • AWESOME!

  • Too cool for school, but a seriously weird choice in video for demonstration.

  • quantum mechanics could be useful for selection of materials that could interact to different specific types of laser light

  • I am definitely looking forward for some OpenLase powered Vectrex-like games.
