Spoken word poet and Olympic performer Shane Koyczan wows a Toronto audience with a new poem from a forthcoming poetry collection. The poem is about his experiences with bullying as a child.

At school I told my teacher about this because we were in our poetry unit.. She printed the poem out and all of the kids were laughing.. I tryed telling some of them what it was about but they kept laughing. The teacher then played us the video and everyone was silent..

I think that the production made it more entertaining or accessible, perhaps, but there's something a bit more human and relate-able in the live performance. I tend to find things more powerful when I feel like I connected to the artist, and I think this recording is quite a lot more intimate in that regard. I think they're both very powerful, each in it's own way, but the animation certainly didn't make the poem more powerful. Just more accessible.
