One call on my Saturday route, picking up four bins at a townhouse complex. This video was done as a headcam experiment. It didn't go as well as I had hoped - too much jitter, out of focus, too much head movement that you obviously don't get from a hand-held camera, view angle and position isn't as good as I had expected, etc (camera position was too high, and the cab ceiling was too low).

I even got a wee bit of motion sickness from watching this video - maybe I'll try to re-edit it later, and see if I can fix it up a bit to take out some of the shakiness and head movement). I thought that having the camera follow the movement of my head as I looked around would enhance the vid. But now I'm not so sure. You be the judge.

For now, here's what I have. I hope you enjoy it. Note the 'bear proof' cans.

And no, I'm not Chester, in case you noticed the name on the door. I only drive this truck on Saturdays. Chester drives it on the weekdays. I'm Al - AKA 'Kimchiman'.

  • this is like a first person shooter LOVE THIS!! LMAO haha great vid man, how did u get ur job? I wanna do a job like that

  • just look up 'garbage truck jobs' on the 'net. You'll probably find one. There's usually someone hiring here and there.

  • what is the beeping? Weight? Or does it tell you the packer came on?

  • It's the scale.

  • why are the lids smaller than the dumpster?

  • These are 'bear proof' bins, with smaller inside lids that require you to depress a latch under the lift handle before they will open.

The main surface of the lids is slanted, so that if a bear tips the can over, it will wedge against the ground, and hopefully stay shut, even if it isn't locked. How well this works in actual practice, I have no idea.

  • @willDANCEforPENNIES The engine is a Cummins, and if you apply with a trash company like this one seen in this video, it all depends on what you get assigned. What he is doing is a commercial run. That is where some of your stops might be a piece of cake to where all you do is drive the truck and work the forklift from inside the cab. Some stops, you have to get out of the truck and yes, into weather to get your dumpster, tip it, and put it back.

  • Ooo I believed I forget my spectacles almost....

  • who makes the engine? And is emptying dumpsters your only job, or do you have to do residential trash pickup too? I've always wanted this job...

  • They are 'bear proof' lids. You open the smaller lid, which has a latch under the handle that must be pushed in, in order to put garbage inside. Typically, the bears aren't supposed to be able to figure that part out, I assume. If the bear tips the can over, the angle of the lid makes it tend to stay shut - maybe...
