In Loren Eisely's, The Immense Journey, his book on the history of life, there is an essay, "How Flowers Changed the World",--sheer poetry-- a description of life on Earth exploding in a 2nd Big Bang. Before the event, Earth is almost asleep, a dull evergreen world of fern and fir trees and slow-motion life forms. Suddenly, life explodes and a biological fireworks of bold, colorful, vibrant, thriving life that transformed life on Earth as we know it today. The Precambrian mushrooming of flowering plants, fruit and warm-blooded animal life opened the door for humans to take center stage. As soon as we human beings stepped through the door, play was already embedded in our DNA, an internal compass that would guide our innovation, tool-making, ethical and productive thinking. Factory Educators are missing something huge, an inbred behavior that evolved as a guiding principle of learning and communication in preparing the young for life. Play has been all but banned from our Factory Farm learning culture, and we need to fix that. 4. With the help of modern technology, the underground advance of Play is poised to crest in a tsunami of a high-touch, warm-blooded media--play language. Flowing and flowering throughout our flat, unnatural, factory farm learning culture, the catalytic, viral influence of Play will bring sweeping, systemic change to the world of Education.
