Clarence Wijewardane is the father of Sinhala Pop music. He revolutionized Sinhala music by pioneering the use of Electric Guitar. He formed his first band 'Moonstones' with Annesley Malewana managed by Vijaya Korea at the age of 21. In 1968 they released their debut album 'Mango Nanda' under Philips label.

Clarence left Moonstones in 1970 and in 1971 he formed 'Golden Chimes' with Chanaka Perera and Lankika Perera. Their first song 'Kimada Naawe' became an instant hit.

In 1972, Clarence joined with the lead guitarist, maestro Dixon Gunaratne and formed 'Super Golden Chimes' and continued to make music until 1979, when he embarked on a solo career. Clarence composed a lot of songs for other artists such as Milton Mallawarachchi, Priya Suriyasena etc. He also directed music for a number of films. He composed over 1000 songs, but 40% of them has not been released.

Clarence died on the 13th December 1996 at the age of 53 from Sirrhosis of the liver. Most of his songs are considered classics and are played at every music circuit in Sri Lanka today even after a few decades.

  • I with my family was present the day this was recorded at the Sarasavia studios in the early 70's. They also recorded Udarata Neeliya and Sudu Menike. We were teenage girls and was so excited. Clarence and Sheila lived in Nugegoda close to where we lived and we used to meet them all the time. Years later we met Clarence again in New York where he had a concert. Our brother played in the band. Sadly it was the last time we would meet him. May his soul rest in peace and long live his music.

  • @TheNomercy777

    Thx!

  • I really don't get why the so called new singers never make music as good as this. Clarence was truly a god when it came to composing, singing, playing instruments, I dont think that there is even one song of his which didnt become a hit. I truly appriciate what he's done to the music industry in SL.

The so called new comers can't even think of coming close to Clarence. He was truly a god! Thank you Clarence for composing such great music which are still living in our hearts!

Thanks for the lovely comment Janaka. I too remember the day when someone broke the news to me of Clarence's death, in London. I have had the pleasure of sitting down and talking with the maestro a few times in SL in my younger days and also met him at a show in London too. You are absolutely right, he was never recognised for his contribution to our music. He invented the style and all others are cashing in on it.

    Regards,

    Jude
