The local communities at Tanjung Bin, southern Peninsular Malaysia, voiced out their protest against a petrochemical project which has been proposed on a 913-hectare mangrove forest near their homes. The proposed development will destroy fisheries and pose health threats to the locals. The communities use the mythical creature in the Sungai Pulai estuary - A Giant Seahorse - to send their plight to the Malaysia Government and to the world.
Mangrove clearing for the proposed petrochemical project has started in June 2009. It is only 50 m away from the Sungai Pulai Ramsar Site - a wetlands of international importance.
