This heartbreaking story is true. Those horses which were not shot were sold to the locals in Egypt and worked to death. After the war, a lady, the wife of a British cavalry officer, set up a foundation to buy back as many as possible, but most of the Light Horse horses were shot by their riders, as Eric tells us.

Just such a beautiful, heartbreaking, tribute. To both the brave Horses who had no knowledge or choice of what they were going into and to the brave men who found the courage to kill their best friends, their horses, upon whom their lives depended in battle. 8 Million Horses died in WW1

One of the saddest war stories there is.... with all repect, we will always honour our war heroes.... these horses were heroes as well.... it's so sad they were shot rather than being return to their homeland..... the reason was issues with quarrantine and available transport .... RIP to all these great and brave horses.

One of my favourite songs by Eric.
An update on my previous post.....
I was in Tamworth NSW a week ago and discovered a bronze statue in their Bicentenial Park of a Lighthorseman and his horse ....it's a tribute to the Lighthorsemen and to only horse that returned.... This song came to mind as I stood there....a sobering and heartbreaking story.... If you vistit Tamworth, drop by the park and see it...it is awesome... Cheers

@pyrofella Thanks mate. I didn't know a horse had returned. I sincerely hope we will live to see the day when there will be no more wars. It looks like it's getting worse instead of better.

@Raymaur46 Hi Mate...yes, his name was Sandy.....He was the only one of 136,000 horses sent abroad during World War I to return. He was the mount of Major-General William Throsby Bridges, who was later killed at Gallipoli.
Sandy lived out his years at the Defence grounds at Maribyrnong, Victoria...he was buried there when he died.
Sandy's head is now preserved at the Australian War Memorial.

@pyrofella Thanks again. I appreciate this info. I'd like to go there if I can and have a look. I think it would be emotional.
