Oscar Peterson, of course. Hard to classify this exclusively as jazz - elements of Debussy and Chopin are there. Plus tone clusters and chord inversions from Schoenberg. Exquisite rubato passages; no one could match Oscar's phrasing.
R.I.P. OP - you were the very best of them all.

  • "Some people try to get very philosophical and cerebral about what they're trying to say with jazz. You don't need any prologues, you just play."

    Oscar Peterson

  • Always a master of the exquisite, of somehow clever overwhelming subtleties, at the same time OP could rock the house in any style he chose. Can't count the number of times he brought me to my feet. Just trying to imitate his style forced you bow to his genius and recognize his roots in Art Tatum, so much like father and son. There will never be such grace and mastery at the keyboard again.

  • @tonycurti1 - Well said, Tony. As Ray Charles put it, "Oscar Peterson is the best of them all. Oscar can play his ass off!" Words of wisdom. Thanks for stopping by.

  • This is my favorite piece by Oscar. It is so touching, beautiful, and innovative. I have a CD which features this melody and many of his others. He was a master of improvisation, and the world lost a true genius when he left us....the pride of Canada.

  • rharrah - do you know the best place to obtain OP's transcripts. I haven't played in years but this has got me ot to start again. I'd appreciate any advice you can offer.

    Thanks,

    TC

  • we are blessed to have his musical genius forever both as as an example of what one can accomplish and as motivation to give people the best possible in entertainment ................

  • Keith Emerson played against Oscar and Oscar made Keith's piano playing seem like child's play. Oscar was "incredible" on the piano!!!!!!!!!
