I have done some research about the two of them, and how they felt about each other. It seemed to be a deep respect for one another, but also a VERY deep rivalry. But I know Force was devastated when Hoffman died.

I think that Al respectfully disliked John. In the early years I'm not sure why, but later I think Al disliked where drag racing was headed what with the multi-car teams and corporate and commercial aspects so common today. I don't blame him sometimes... but maybe he thought John represented all that Al disliked about racing. I personally used to like Force, but with how he and TV has made funnycar racing more like a soap opera I've grown to see where Al was coming from.
