This song was written by Jimmy Webb and made popular performed by The Highwaymen. I like it so much, I covered it. I added the soldier verse. I hope you like it.
Below are the lyrics. The forth line in the first verse was
altered to compensate for the soldier verse.

HIGHWAYMAN

I was a highwayman. Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a young men shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
But I am still alive.

I was a sailor. I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide.
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still.

I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around.

I'll always be around and around and around and around and around

I was a soldier
Fought with honor and with pride
Buried my brothers where they lied
Pinned down in battle in the darkness all alone
Stayed at my post and flag until the fort was blown
They never found me when the dust and smoke would clear
But I am still here.

I fly a starship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain

And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again..

  • Fantastic Rendition. The addition of the soldier verse is exceptional, & should be a permanent addition to the song, very well done. When I heard it, I remembered, back before the days of the i-pod and Internet, when I severed. I had ponied up a soldiers verse too, forgotten now. No matter, yours is far better. But when in bivwac & the only music we had was the music we sang, I though it was pretty good. Thank you for conjuring up memories of Brothers in Arms, I hadn't recalled in years.

  • Thank you for the compliment.

  • the song wasn't actually written by Johnny. It was written by Jimmy Webb i do believe. Good cover though i really enjoyed the added verse.

  • thanks for the correct credit info.

  • absolutely incredible. 5/5 the fact that you turned it into a duet was even better. and then we get to the soldier verse. it completed what the origional song was missing grade a. I don't usually say things this nice. Bravo

  • thank you.

  • i quite like the added soldier verse. good stuff.

  • Thanks for posting the lyrics, T. Reading your Soldier's verse gave me goosebumps. In my opinion, it makes and finishes this song.

  • I first heard your version of The Highwayman a couple of months ago. Like other posters, I was deeply moved by your Soldier verse. I spent over two hours searching YouTube to find this again, and find it I did--in my very own Favorites. :D

    Epic song, props to you.
