The Gladiolas' version is better. The Diamonds did a pretty decent imitation, but it's clearly in second place. However, Maurice Williams is not complaining. Due to the fact that the Diamonds' version was a big hit, I'm sure he cashed a few checks as the writer of the song.

thegroupharmoneyalley What station is this on? I'd like to listen to it! This is the version I remember. I was 7 years old and even then was blown away by the sound. It was the first record I ever owned.

@deltic1964 They own it. I heard The Gladiolas. The Diamonds wiped them out.

I wholeheartedly agree. They sounded amazing in 1957 and they sound amazing in the 21st century.

but it's true, the Gladiola's version is lame compared to this.

You really think so?? What standard are you using to make such a judgment??! The writer understood how he wanted the song to be interpreted.

Lighten up! It's just someone else's opinion. Music is like art - very subjective.

I agree with you, Mike. The inflammatory use of profanity is uncalled for. On my radio program, The Group Harmony Alley, we break it down for serious minded collectors and appreciators of good music, such as the subtle flavors and nuancesconveyed by the son clave rhythms implemented by M. Williams/Gladiolas. Theorists, musicians, singers, and writers like to break it down, and discuss the art...sans profanity, the way commentators discuss sports/sports figures. Such fun each Sun. Good stuff!
