In this comic opera written for the imperial court in Vienna for the Carnival season, the Italian composer Francesco Conti adroitly weaves the amorous adventures of two couples with one of the greatest works in literary history. This is a fantasy on a fantasy, because the hero Don Quixote is primarily fascinated by books, and the characters with whom he comes into contact seem to have jumped out of the literature he has been reading. By the time the couples who were truly intended for one another have finally been united, the hero appears to be nearly mad and exhausted. He has but one choice: to return home and never again read another book. The composer, a celebrated lutenist, gives a refreshing and invigorating turn to established Baroque forms, and imparts the encouraging message that every man has the right to his modicum of madness.
