Peter of Atlanta, GA wanted to know what would be the best surge protector to get to protect his parents' new HDTV. Robert says to try the Tripp-Lite brand.
Looks like five people are disbelievers. Unless you've seen for yourself what the advantages of actually protecting your equipment are, perhaps you won't believe they exist. Here's hoping you never find yourself in the situation where you wish you had something!
Upon reviewing the Surgex site...it appears to be a Brickwall, Zero Surge unit. The specs lead one to that conclusion as they are virtually the same as Brick and Zero. They seem to be pretty good L-N units. They can fail, and they only protect 1 mode...when there are three modes. Their marketing is great...but very misleading. There is nothing wrong with a high end MOV all-mode protection unit - in fact - it's probably better. The problem is finding one that does what it says it's going to do.
The utility industry standard for delivered voltage is +/- five percent. At a nominal voltage of 120, you can actually expect from 114 to 126 volts at any given time. Tolerances are usually much tighter, say one to two percent.
Surgex is by far the best. Everything else is MOV based, regardless of the price.
MOV based product is by design sacrificial. You don't know when it will eventually go down. Their filtering is fantastic as well. Gi to their website, they can explain it better than me.
The best Surge Protector, bar none, is the Philips model with unlimited Joules protection with a $1,000,000 equipment guarantee. This fella can be reset after a major surge like a lightning strike. All the rest become less efficient after a big spike. Anything under 5000 joules is useless if you get a major power spike.
SurgeX, Brickwall or Zero Surge FTW, I have two SurgeX units, one on my 46 inch Samsung LCD and one for my PC and all my networking equipment. Look them up- nothing beats series mode power conditioners and they don't wear out.
Most of these devices employ MOV's (Metal oxide varistors) that degrade with time, and may even only last once and sacrifice themselves to save the device that is plunged into it. Look into surge protectors that have 2 or more kinds of protection Like Brick wall, Richard Gray's Power Company or PS audio make better products. BUT Belkin, Panamax, Monster, are garbage. they will protect your gear once and go into bypass mode leaving your gear unprotected. if all else fails unplug your gear!
