Muslims oppose church bells

The Muslim community in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region is opposing plans to include church bells in a proposed new regional anthem. Local authorities had earlier set a competition to compose an anthem for the region.

I don't get it? I heard a Muslim cleric stating that a national anthem should not have any religious content so that it can be 'all inclusive' - as a Christian, I have to say I agree wholeheartedly with the Muslim Cleric here - this is not about church bells - but about the chance to produce a new Anthem that should be all inclusive and foster a regional sense of pride and belonging. The title and reporting of this clip is so shamelessly misleading.

The day the Muslims can complain about church bells in the Russian National Anthem is the day that as many Churches and Synagogues are built in Saudi Arabia as the Mosques the Saudis have financed around the world. That will be many thousands - and they should be just as big and just as strategically placed. Simple; what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

bells have civic roles as well as religious roles. For example in england the word curfew comes from the word in norman french to put old you fires
