Johnny Marr describes his guitar playing with The Smiths. "I wanted to sound like an entire record when I played." He plays his Rickenbacker. "Yeah, it's all kinda of ringy and melodic, and.... I listen to a lot of different guitarists and music, everything from shred like malmsteen to buddy guy to wes montgomery. The best sound I've ever heard a guitar make is when this guy is playing. What a lush sound

I think he's the only guitarist who I could just listen to on it's own...if you took away the drums, bass and vocals...you'd still be left with great songs...a very full sound and just pure perfection from this amazing creature. Fuck me...he really does sound like an entire record when he plays.

Does anyone know what set up he was playing with during the interview, apart from the Ric and Fender amp....Some sort of mix of compression, chorus, delay/reverb...??

I bought the last Smiths vinyl in 1987. I am not a guitar player, but I totally respected the work. At that time it was the big JM one in "Paint A Vulgar Picture".
