How PCI Biotech's technology achieves drug delivery.

The photosensitiser (S) and the drug (D) are injected into a patient and carried by the blood stream to the target cells (T). The photosensitiser and the drug are taken up by the cell through endocytosis, but the drug is unable to reach the target, as it is encapsulated in an endosome. PCIs technology is able to induce endosomal release by using light to activate the photosensitiser. The endosomes are destroyed and the drug is then released.
