Having sold an estimated 300350 million copies of his books, King is best known for his work in horror fiction, in which he demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the genre's history. Many of his stories have been adapted for other media, including movies, television series and comic books. King has written a number of books using the pen name "Richard Bachman" and one short story where he was credited as "John Swithen". In 2003 he received The National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

King has won 6 Bram Stoker awards, 6 Horror Guild awards, 5 Locus Awards, 3 World Fantasy Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004), the 1996 O. Henry award, a Hugo Award in 1982 for the non-fiction Danse Macabre. He was given a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 by the Horror Writers' Association and a Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from the National Book Foundation in 2003. In 2007, King received an award for lifetime achievement from the Canadian Literary Guild, the only non-Canadian to be bestowed this award.

Oh, my goodness, I thought people had the right to freedom of speech in this beautiful America that this Puerto Rican woman (me) is so grateful to and found a second home in. I love Stephen King! I have watched 15 of his movies and the movies drove me to get the original novels! I became more a fan after reading the novels 'cause they're great. I have yet to read the Twilight SERIES to see what all the hoopla is about, but seriously, as a Stephen King fan, these Twihard comments offended me.
