West Coast LEAF launches public service announcement

August 27th, 2001 -- The West Coast Legal Education and Action Fund for women launches is first public service announcement today. The PSA, filmed in Vancouver by students from Langara College, will be shown prior to every screening at the Festival Cinemas chain for the month of September.

The 60-second PSA celebrates West Coast LEAF values of diversity, equality and inclusion. It is set in iconic Vancouver locations with a fall theme. The PSA was filmed and edited by Ryan Anderson and the concept was created by Lizzy Karp, Becky Caissie, Vanessa Galt and Heather McGowan.

The PSA was debuted at the West Coast LEAF Equality Breakfast in March 2010. It helps to mark the 25th anniversary of the Vancouver-based women's organization. West Coast LEAF was formed in 1985 when the equality sections of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms came into effect. Its mission is to steward and advance the equality guarantees of the Charter through BC-based test case litigation, law reform and public legal education.

West Coast LEAF executive director Alison Brewin says, "We're thrilled to share our vision with a broader audience. We often hear that women's equality has been achieved, when in fact there are still many hurdles in BC and Canada. For example, not many people know that Rwanda has the highest percentage of women in Parliament in the world, while Canada has slipped to 47th in the world. It's important to encourage people to think and be educated, while leaving them with a positive message."

Festival Cinemas includes Fifth Avenue (2110 Burrard St.), The Park Theatre (3440 Cambie Street), and The Ridge Theatre (3131 Arbutus Street).

West Coast LEAF thanks Leonard Schein and Festival Cinemas for this opportunity.

West Coast LEAF's mission is to achieve equality by changing historic patterns of systemic discrimination against women through BC-based equality rights litigation, law reform and public legal education.
