In the winter of 1964, Nelson Mandela arrived on Robben Island where he would spend 18 of his 27 prison years. Confined to a small cell, the floor his bed, a bucket for a toilet, he was forced to do hard labor in a quarry.
In the summer of '06 I videotaped my tour of ROBBEN ISLAND, South Africa... with the tour guide describing Mandela's cell, and a description of the lifestyle for the prisoners then.
BACKSTORY: Nelson Mandela (1918-- ) was initially tried and sentenced to prison for encouraging black South Africans to go on strike and for illegally leaving South Africa. For most of his life Mandela fought for an end to apartheid (a system of segregation based on race that gave advantages to whites while restricting blacks to labor reserves) in South Africa.
