The composer of this popular 19th c salon piece is a mystery. I have seen it suggested that he is Charles Galos, and I have also seen a reference to an Italian musician of the era called Celestino Galos. There is also a piano roll recording of this work by a Mme. G Galos. It is often published under the Spanish title 'El Canto del Pastor'. Since Galos' other 'hit' was a piece entitled 'Le Lac de Como' I feel he was probably an Italian. The piece is sometimes described as 'arranged' by him, but any shepherds singing this would presumably be bel canto opera singers enjoying a second career!.

  • @anhnaypro123 I will see if I can help.

  • I used to work in the Pianola Museum in Amsterdam. I first hear this piece of music on role. I am surprised by the beauty of the other compositions by Galos you recorded as well. The Pianola Museum houses a large collection of beautiful 'salon' music for piano, captured on roles. Most of the pieces, and their composers unfortunately, are forgotten today: Thomé, Scharwenka and Pierné.

  • @Porkolty Thank you. I was aware that the Pianola Museum had a roll of a Galos piece. I only wish we knew more about the composer.
