Big Cat Rescue receives literally hundreds of calls about big cats that need a home each year and it is really hard to turn them away. Unfortunately we can only agree to rescue a few cats each year due to lack of funds and the space required to build more enclosures. We realize that the best way to make the most impact and help as many animals as we can is to attend meetings and speak up against the private owners and people who breed/exploit captive animals to make a living.

A group of Big Cat Rescue staff and volunteers recently attended the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Captive Wildlife Workshop in Kissimmee, weds 25th Feb 2009. As you can see from the video we were really out numbered and we really need more florida residents who care about animal welfare to join us at the next meeting and speak out on behalf of the animals.

If you would like to help us and the animals please take a few minutes to e-mail your comments to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at: rulechanges@MyFWC.com or comments can be mailed to this address:
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Attn. Capt. Linda Harrison, 620 S. Meridian Street, Tallahassee, FL 32399-1600.

The next meeting is june 17th & 18th at Crystal River, Florida. For more info please visit: MyFWC.com where an agenda will be posted closer to the dates.

This is the best chance we have of getting rules changed regarding captive wild animals and it would be great to see more people there who really care about animal welfare.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Thank you for watching and for any more information regarding the rules we are trying to change visit:

  • I feel like im a few years too late for this e-mail. have there been changes yet to the rules and regulations of big cat captivity? im hugely concerned about animals that dont have proper housing and am also against breeding of class 1 wildlife for profit. It's just irresponsible and wrong. Is the FFWCC still accepting these e-mails? I definitely want to give my opinion in favor of the best welfare for these animals

  • @BlinkinFirefly The FWC is always accepting emails, whether or not they may be regarding particular rules? If you visit our website you can find contact information along with other ways to get involved to help give these animals a voice, thank you! :)

  • when i asked my mom for a cat, she sais wait untill you get your own home. i'm all like... that's like, 10 years from now! but everyone in my family is has allergic reactions for cats but me and my sister, but she wants a "puppy"! she just cares about baby animals!

  • That sucks that your family have allergic reactions to cats, hope you are able to get a pet cat, maybe rescue one from a shelter!?

  • @BigCatRescue

you know im not from america, and i dont know if your concearned about other countries. but assuming you are. i see that captive breeding help big cats from going extinct. you know i own many large animals, including cheetas and mid sized cats. they have a huge place to run. in my country, which is saudi arabia, its a tradition to hunt rabbits with cheetas, do you expect people like us to stop doing what my fathers did for 3000 years?

  • Well there's a difference between big cats being bred as part of a species survival plan in accredited zoos and the breeding of tigers and other big cats in backyards to sell into the pet trade. We need to evolve as a race and have to draw the line somewhere, maybe it's time to stop using cheetahs to hunt for rabbits!

  • No one should have them as pet's.They should be taken care of

  • I've lived in Florida some 40 years now, and FL is surprisingly backwards in many ways, esp in rural areas (where I live now).

People here fight over who gets to put deer road-kill in their pick-up trucks. Neighbors hunt and eat squirrels. Coon hunts are still common. Next-door neighbors asked permission to kill the deer they'd spooted in our 2.5-acre yard (answer: of course not!).

    I'll be at that meeting.

  • @Rolofgild1337 Yeah my dad is allergic to cats but he said he'll deal with tho, (I am getting a cat on Friday), but i had to wait for like three years for him to finally decide i could!

  • I think you are good people for doing this. ChaCha

  • i have a pet albino black panther

  • i agree with your point,i think alot of the one sidedness is the intrest factor.the exployters have an intrest in animals (with a difrent ajenda) while the passive animal fan does not have enough facts to argue a point or enough intrest to show up at a meeting.i ask people all the time if they watch PBS and 99.9% do not...we need to drasticly change the way we think in america to change the outcome.we can't have a total ban on animal ownership either.people learn from doing not reading .

  • i really want to help concerve animals, i'm even taking summer school so i can get into univercity so i can help save animals,

i would be my dream job to be a vet for BCR

  • i was with out net for a while i hape i am not to late to haelp on our cause
