China is hoping to overthrow its reputation as one of the one of the most polluted countries in the world.

The enormous scale of environmental problems and their impact on public health has pushed the government to invest in new, more efficient industrial technologies aimed at curbing pollution.

Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan reports from Beijing.

  • Very impressive for a country with more than 1 billion people.

I find it funny when us Americans complain that China has almost over passed us in polution levels. Really? look at the people ratio, 4 to 1, I say China is doing a more than an enough good work in keeping a stable level.

  • Unless you lead your party, you can't mock other nations. You are just a slave.

  • Free Tibet,Boycott totalitarian states,boycott slavery,boycott China.

  • Why is U.S. complaining? China has 4x as much people as them, much of China's money comes from factories which emit pollution. Also US has maybe 1 or 2 percent lower than China,so they aren't doing so well either.China also spends more money on developing green tech than any other country on the planet, what about the US?

  • @Renegen1 If they're profit-driven, then yes. But Sinopec is owned by the Chinese government and take their orders from there. Sinopec's move into the clean energy market is part of a cohesive strategy by China to both reduce emission and find alternative energy sources to oil. The government noted that in 10 years, they'll be facing severe energy crisis if they don't start acting. Which is why they'll be spending $400 billion on green tech in the next 5 years and patronize green tech companies.

  • Why are we talking about American Wind power and "Socialism here? I have no idea. This is about Chinese wind and Solar power!

  • Yeah, they're into a green economy. Tens, twenties, fifties and hundreds - all green, all ours. You may line up and make your

contributions at Wall Mart. Thank you, global economy. Wall Street is loving it and the unemployment office is swamped.

  • The american midwest has enough wind power that goes through it everyday to power all of the US electrical needs and then some.
