This song was released by The Marvelettes on the Tamla label in 1962, with Gladys Horton, who sung lead.

Composed by Marvin Gaye, William "Mickey" Stevenson and Berry Gordy.

In 1981, Karen and Richard Carpenter recorded it for their album, "Made in America." They then released it as a single in 1982

Wish Karen was still around.....we miss her voice and her music.....

I thought The Carpenters did nicely with this song but it was a little subtler than The Marvelettes' version. But that was The Carpenters' kind of music: clean and sweet. The Marvelettes let it all hang out and you could tell they had a blast with the song. So I consider The Carpenters' version great (+5) and The Marvelettes' version excellent (10). That's my opinion, for what it's worth.

This is a great version of this song, I love Karen so much, I know all of her songs, and sing with her all the time, I can't wait to meet her in heaven, I feel bad for her she had this horrible desease, She is the best pop singer ever, nobody will ever top her now, or NEVER, her music is timeless and will live on forever, even people 100 years from now will still probably love her. LOVE YOU KAREN, YOU ARE MY ANGEL! :)

so if karen was the "straw that stirred the carpenters drink"- and she was- you would think those closest to her would have given her the emotional support to beat her illness. you would think her brother would spearhead this effort since without her voice his music was basically elevator muzak.just a thought from someone who likes many types of pop music.

Karen was 5/4 right, regardless of what she weighed she always appeared quite tall to me as I'm 5'3 and everyone towers over me, sorry was just an observation, good job on the song, Karen has 1 of the best voices I've ever heard.....Rip Karen
