Jim eats the babel nut and suddenly understands what is being said to him. The shopowner wanted to trade, and admired Jim's knife.

Jim gets an idea to trade, and the boys start hauling metal and wood utensils to the other world to be traded for coin. The people were nervous and suspicious with the foriegners, as they brought in items that appeared stolen.

The food was horrible and often made the boys sick, so they would drink ale. The tavern was pretty quiet, had two ugly waitresses, and the tavernkeeper was an older, chubby guy (resembled a walrus) with all a lot of hair. The fear and concern of what the boys want in the little community.

The choices in life: work or fight. Be a farmer, laborer, drive wagons, maybe learn to write and be a clerk, or become a soldier or mercenary. Everyone carried a knife, people used their hands constantly.

A quiet community, with occasional visitors. "Scraping by" takes on a literal meaning.

A life of combat is hard and makes you hard.
