Is everyone forgetting this is a show based roughly on reality... (so that's real events with a dollop of fantasy thrown in).

I don't understand the script writers motives. When you throw in some nonsensical techno babble into your script the people who don't understand what it means still won't understand, and the people who do understand will just piss themselves laughing. Why not just have the line "I'm going to go and see if I can trace the IP address"
