@claynpendleton Not quite, this song is a very traditional song that was sang a lot in the south. Think like blues circa 1910's and ledbelly style.

They wrote the song, The Beach Boys got rich off of it

@debobwan Interesting. I know the chords as C-G/G7-C-F-C-G/G7-C, I'll try those chords one of these days.

Those of you complaining that the song isn't sad enough or doesn't sound enough like the Beach Boys need to understand that songs have different versions. This is exactly how they sang it years before the Brian Wilson version.

@leastyler do you know Lonnie Donegans version of John B ? Can't find it. Better than anything they present here. Damn it !

Really good version. But it could have been a bit sadder for my liking :)

@oldstuff Just listen to Jerry Lee Lewis & Van Morrison version of this song to hear a masterpiece.
Saw the Beach Boys sing live in the 60;s & they were SHIT-HOUSE.The sound was weak & they almost got booed off the stage. This concert was in Melbourne,Australia.
It just shows you how much is made up in the recording studios, with overdubbing etc.

Here is the chord pattern throughout the song. I did not indicate the number of measures each chord is played, but that is pretty evident as one hears the song: G--D--G--C--Am--G--D--G--D
