Some time in early July, one of the VI Road show team members saw a presentation she was really impressed with. The presentation didn't involve any PowerPoint (thank heavens) but simply consisted of a guy drawing a diagram on a white board. That presentation was given by Kevin Bisking, one of the Product Managers here at NI. Kevin did a good job of explaining why multicore is so cool so we had him come and give it to us on camera so that everyone else could benefit from it. The only reason we didn't post is sooner is that he mentions LabVIEW 8.5 and we didn't want to be accused of being meddlesome trouble makers before the launch.
Before seeing this, I had just assumed that multicore just meant faster processing. What I didn't understand was that multicore only means faster when the software takes advantage of it. If the software can only run on a single core, then I believe that limits you to whatever that particular core is capable of. Unfortunately, it seems like most of the programs I use are old enough that they were not written for multicore so I don't get much advantage from multicore processors unless I use something like LabVIEW 8.5. In the future, however, I assume that the software I use will all eventually get up to speed... as long as I am willing to purchase the upgrades.
hey my last name is bisking too. Daniel Bisking
