(All copy rights are for PBS.) Catherine II , also known as Catherine the Great. She reigned as Empress of Russia from 9 July 1762 after the assassination of her husband, Peter III. Under her direct auspices the Russian Empire expanded, improved its administration, and continued to modernize along Western European lines. • That's great!:-) Thank you very much, this is one of my favourite documentaries.

  • @1307 They spoke French at the court because at that time it considered "the language of civilization" throughout Europe and was both the language of diplomacy and the language of the court.

  • @arecccccc How sad for you ! Never have read Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot... not being able to understand great works of art, or poetry like Baudelaire, Appolinaire, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Hugo, Racine, Corneille...

  • @Mandinko23 russians always prefered germans, they learnt everything from germans and of course italians, have you ever heard people saying for hermitage "russian versaille" ? all turist who have been in versaille, they say contrary that versaille is the french hermitage, in architecture, science , art and educational system in russia have always been german style, not french, since french have nothing but propoganda and lies.

  • @LeonSpinx1 it was more about politics, they were using french because Maria Theresia became ally with french, and for her it was another conquest, plus they were using french because ordinary people could not understand it. The best philosophers, musicians and scientist were italians or germans, french were and will always remain charlatans, craps and bustards

  • strange, france which was the garbage of europe had some "worthy" philosophers ?!?

I love Kant and dont give shit for any french "philosopher".

  • @Bristain11 It's even weirder in Tolstoy's "War and Peace" when they're all speaking French--while fighting Napoleon. Nice historical irony.

  • @LeahWalentosky it may have been cruel but cruelty is sometimes necessary for stability and prosperity. Catherine was likely a greater ruler than he could have ever been.

  • @Natulcien1992 French and Spanish are very fast languages.
