Suilven was ordered by Rederi A/S Alpha, of Moss in Norway from the yard of Moss Rosenberg Verft A/S, also based in Moss. She was due to be named Bastø VI for their Moss-Horten route. Her sister was Bastø V which did enter service on her designed route. She was sold to Caledonian-MacBrayne whilst under construction, and entered service as Suilven between Ullapool and Stornoway in 1974. She remained on this route for over 20 years, being withdrawn in July 1995. She was sold soon afterwards to Strait Shipping of Wellington, New Zealand, for service between Wellington and Nelson, retaining the name Suilven (a mountain near Ullapool). In 2004 she passed to Bligh Water Shipping of Fiji, marketed as Suilven Shipping.
postcards of her can be found on www.simplonpc(dot)co(dot)uk including some from the storm video

  • I miss Suilven on the Ullapool to Stornoway crossing. Especially after the Isle of Lewis almost going over on her side while I was crossing on it easter of 2006. 3 or 4 casualties on board. Only time I've ever been sea sick was on Suilven as a child and the entire crew were sick too but I never felt unsafe on her. Nice video but those seas look tame compared to the Minch on a really bad day. Seoras.

  • what the fuck was he thinking

  • haha, that's so cool. what a great crossing. They certainly got their moneys worth that time.

  • at least they knew how to turn the ship into the waves

  • I loved the Suliven. A sturdy ship.

  • sorry guys, but the vessel IS the MV Suilven when she was operating in New Zealand with Strait Shipping. Vid shows her leaving the North Island, crossing to the South Island via the Cook Strait in a Southerly swell 2002 :)

  • lol, this IS actually the MV Kent, used by Straight Shipping

  • you are wrong , this is the suilven

  • Joem6197 is right.

It's not the Suliven, it went to work for some Scandinavian company.

  • wrong! this is the Suliven.
