Sunday, Sept. 21 Our Community is Fair Day and the Rubber Hand Pipe takes a stand by the pond. Beautiful sunny day and all the kids came and young at heart. Everybody coloring surgical rubber gloves. This project began about 5 years ago at a Teen Arts event. Artists Judy Wray and Little Bobby Duncan brought in a 12 ft high PVC pipe with a base of car wheel rims welded together. Duncan had drilled the length of the pipe full of holes. Teens from Perth Amboy spent the afternoon coloring the gloves with permanent magic markers and then inserting the tied ends into the holes in the pipe. Five years latter there have been more than 2000 hands given in this way and it is documented on the website valweb.org; and on Youtube.com. A second smaller pipe stands in front of Eighteen Lumber Company and a third is rising in Tepoztlan, Morelos, Mexico at Socorro Vargas' Bed & Breakfast at the foot of Mt. Tepozteca. Here in NJ, The Rubber Hand Pipe has recently moved from UMDNJ-RWJMS to the Raritan Valley YMCA on Tices Ln. East Brunswick, NJ. For more info:
