@btr1701 The auditions are hold behind a curtains- if a women is good enough, she would be employed.

This seventh. This glorious seventh, which begins in darkness and ends in light. A light of earth, however. And this earthly light carries us toward the light of the divine, which is the eighth and then on to the light of eternity, which is the ninth.

"I can see the light...and it burns!"

Great interpretation. But the orchestra is not perfect as I heard yesterday the Mahler 6th with the New York Philarmonic and Bernstein
-
Nothing beats the 8th.

I actually don't agree. Simon Rattle does the 8th far superior to Bernstein, expecially the finale. I heard S.Rattle conducting it here on youtube, with the full choir and etc, and the cd i've got with Bernstein just sounds weak next to it.

Bernstein was simply the greatest Mahler interpreter ever. End of story. Anyone who argues that this isn't amazing Mahler doesn't know Beethoven from Stravinsky.

Wow!

@btr1701 Just the harpist - she can be seen at the very end.
Not one woman in this whole orchestra. How odd.

Why? This was the Vienna Philharmonic in the 1970s. They have always been a traditionally all-men orchestra. Even today, there's only one or two women.
